I think we all would agree natural is better than artificial. Reality is better than fake. So, why then, do we not trust the natural healing powers we have available to us – and some are within our own body already? It is said that our bodies are temples and should be treated with respect and they will reward us. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to our health!
Nutritional healing helps boost our own body’s immune system, heals our wounds, fights infection and replenishes nutrients that have become depleted in our body. Things that prevent healing of our bodies include:
Overuse of medications
Chemical toxins
Yeast overgrowth such as Candida
Damaged livers
Poor nutrition
Under-producing glands such as the thymus, thyroid and adrenals
Inadequate sleep and exercise
When we eat healthy, our bodies are able to manufacture good red blood cells to give our cells oxygen along with good white blood cells that will fight infection on their own if it is not a major infection.
Natural health products such as witch hazel, aloe vera and Chinese herbs all help the skin and tissues from maladies such as acne to eczema. Probiotic soaps help with the yeast Candida. Evening primrose oil will help with menstrual cramps and menopause symptoms. These are all natural ways that promote healing.
We don’t all eat healthy so sometimes we need vitamins to supplement our diets. Doses of extra Vitamin C can ward off common colds and lower pressure in the eyes. Vitamin B12 has been shown to reduce eye floaters and Vitamin D3 has been used for increasing bone health.
Integrative medicine (IM) is becoming more popular in the United States. Simply stated, this approach to medicine treats the mind, body and spirit. It treats the ‘whole person’ and not just the disease. Nutrition, fitness, yoga, tai chi and meditation are all used. It is reported that one in three people in the United States use some sort of alternative therapies for their own wellness. IM is not so much as an alternative or replacement for traditional treatments but is thought to complement them.
Hospitals are also getting on the bandwagon and offering more IM services as evidenced by a study showing 20% of U.S. hospitals offering IM. This treatment adds the best practices from other cultures and expands the healing beyond traditional Western methods.
There are many natural health products and home remedies. Saline (a salt solution) clears nasal passages and helps open them in times of colds and flu. Saline can also be used to gargle with and soothes the sore throat. For that throat tickle, a tea with tannin will reduce the urge to constantly cough reducing making the throat inflamed. Another throat soother can be made with honey for a thicker solution and then adding raspberry leaves or lemon juice. The ‘hot toddy’ of decades ago which adds a small amount (one ounce) of whiskey or bourbon is still prescribed in most medical circles today and also helps the person relax and rest. Caution: too much alcohol will cause inflamed membranes and make the person more ill!
Certain foods also help heal and add electrolytes back into one’s system. These include bananas, rice, and blueberries. Blueberries have amazing properties that can reduce diarrhea and act as an aspirin reducing fever and body aches. Chili peppers, horseradish and onions not only help with weight loss but they also can clear nasal passages and open up airways.
Let natural healthy choices be the choices you make today!
